Insider's Guide to Top 2020 Picks

Proven Winners®’ rigorous trialing and selection process chooses only varieties with the best potential for beauty, performance and disease resistance.  This year’s new varieties are no different and include several essential options consumers will adore!

We talked with Josh Miller, New Product Development Manager at Four Star, to find out which new and improved varieties are generating the most excitement.

“There are a lot of great new offerings this year, as well as some outstanding refinements,” he says.  “Proven Winners hit a good pool of breeding and many of those improved varieties are really worth a close look.”

Several new annuals are part of the Proven Winners Essentials program for growers and retailers going into the 2020 growing season.  Here are some of Miller’s favorites:

Lemon Blush White Wonder

Heart to Heart™ ‘Lemon Blush’ & White Wonder Caladium – “These Caladiums are well branched and easy for consumers to grow,” he notes.  “The ‘Lemon Blush’ variety will make a splash in shady spots with its rosy red center and chartreuse margin.  White Wonder flourishes in both sun and shade and was a ‘Plant of Distinction’ at the UGA Field Trials.”

Superbells® Blackcurrant Punch™ Calibrachoa – “The color of this plant is electric,” says Miller. “It’s a similar color to Superbells Blackberry Punch™, but this one has more color coverage and mid-season vigor.  A real beauty!”

Superbells® Dreamsicle® Calibrachoa – “The improvements on this very popular variety include more flowers and end-of-season longevity, much stronger branching and improved habit.  This is a color gardeners love,” he adds.

SUPERBELLS® Double Blue Calibrachoa SUPERBELLS® Double Amber Calibrachoa SUPERBELLS® Double Orange Calibrachoa

Superbells® Double series Calibrachoa – Miller notes that the Double Blue, Double Amber and Double Orange varieties in this series work to support the blooms and branches of other plants, with great color options.  “These plants will fill in combinations, and they have faster growth like standard Superbells, with more vigor. They are full doubles, and they bury their dead well.”

HEAT IT UP™ Scarlet Gaillardia HEAT IT UP™ Yellow Gaillardia

Heat It Up™ Scarlet and Yellow Gaillardia — “This is a durable annual that is very unique and ideal for tougher landscape applications, like Truffula™ Pink Gomphrena,” he notes.  “Its tolerance for drought and heat, plus its non-stop daisy-like flowers make it a great utility plant that will grow bushier to fill in a large area.  It is perfect for use in the south and west.”

SUNCREDIBLE™ Yellow Helianthus

Suncredible™ Yellow Helianthus— “This variety keeps giving and giving, right up to frost,” Miller says. “It is big and beautiful, and fills in the toughest landscape areas, growing up to 42 in.  It will keep growing and save thrifty gardeners the cost of planting mums, and its iconic sunflower is perfect for harvest displays.  This grower-friendly variety is easier to grow than seed varieties.  It also works well as a cut flower.”

SUNSTAR™ Pink Pentas SUNSTAR™ Lavender Pentas
SUNSTAR™ Red Pentas SUNSTAR™ Rose Pentas

Sunstar™ series Pentas— “These are very durable heat lovers, in bright colors of Pink, Lavender, Red and Rose,” he notes.  “They will definitely hold up in the heat of the south and west, and they have the biggest flowers for Pentas I have ever seen! They are ideal for mass plantings, are easy to grow in cooler climates, and consumers will love how those colorfast flowers hold up in the weather.”

Supertunia® Raspberry Rush™ Petunia — “People who loved the color of Raspberry Blast will love this very similar look,” Miller predicts. “This is a true Supertunia, so it is very durable through the seasons, good for all kinds of mixes, and a strong, excellent plant on its own.”

Supertunia Vista® Snowdrift™ Petunia — “The Vistas are bred to specific performance standards for all-season landscape beauty,” he says. “Snowdrift was stalwart in the brutal central Florida summer trails.  It has weatherproof blooms, good in a small pot and perfect for mass plantings and large hanging baskets.  It is a true, clear white that complements other colors (hot or cold).  This gives it huge potential for combinations and landscape sales.”

Rockin’® Blue Suede Shoes™ Salvia— “This variety stands out in the Rockin’ series because of its soft powder blue flowers and attractive black calyx that complements it,” he explains. “It has good petal substance that holds the color, which is a pastel that glows at dusk.  In addition, it is a hummingbird magnet that the pollinators will compete for.”

Snowstorm® series Sutera — “This series has two new color additions – Glacier Blue™ (center) and Rose (bottom left), as well as improvements for Blue (top left), Pink (top right) and Snow Globe® (bottom right).”  Miller explains that the improvements focus on two key areas: greenhouse growing and summer performance. “They are all matched with performance and timing, which makes them easier to produce, and they have improved vigor, more branching and more color. The whole series is now more robust, but make sure to prevent dry-downs.  They still need good water management, like any Sutera.”

More outstanding varieties

Miller also highlighted several other varieties that have created excitement with gardeners:

SUPERBELLS® Tabletop Blue Calibrachoa SUPERBELLS® Tabletop Red Calibrachoa SUPERBELLS® Tabletop White Calibrachoa

Superbells® Tabletop™ series Calibrachoa — “These compact varieties are ideal for any small space container and perfect for urban markets.  They are well branched and bring full color coverage anywhere they go.  Liner production will not suffer because they grow to maturity at the same time as other Superbells, yet they’re compact enough not to outgrow small containers.  Plus, fewer PGRs are needed.”

Diamond Snow™ Euphorbia — “This new double-flower variety is a dynamite introduction, with much stronger vigor than Diamond Delight® and the perfect ability to fill in where it needs to be,” he says. “Because it fills in so well, it really impacts the color and can be used in unique applications.”

SUNPATIENS® Compact Blush Pink Impatiens

SunPatiens® Compact Impatiens — “SunPatiens has been a popular variety of full-sun Impatiens for several years as a Proven Selections®  favorite.  Now, the best selections for retail and landscape have been elevated as Proven Winners varieties.”

Luscious® Goldengate™ Lantana — “True gold is the color of this Lantana with excellent branching,” says Miller. “It shapes up and colors up really well in a small pot so it looks really good on the bench.  It will be great in the landscape with that unwavering gold color.”

AROMANCE™ Pink Nemesia

Aromance™ Pink Nemesia — “This is a spring crop that offers both fragrance and durability that lasts into the summer, with good garden performance.  It can persist and shine again in the fall, too!”
